Hello, and welcome to the design service section.

BotBuilder not only designs and manufactures robot kits, we also offer a custom design and manufacturing service. Along with our manufacturing partners, we are skilled in product design and engineering.

If you need a bespoke robot for a certain application, education, art exhibition or educational robot we can help. You may just need some consultation in these areas, which we also provide. We have created some very cool robots in these areas.

We also can assist and consult on aspects of robot design, advising on the best methods to achieve your goal.

Not only do we design robots, but products too. We have produced all kinds of promotional products and prototypes.

How we work

After receiving a brief, we will work out the best design for your application. We will work closly with you to ensure that all your requirements are met. Concept designs are created in 2D CAD then prototyped in 3D. Also if needed a physical working model is made.

Once the design is approved, it is sent to manufacturing.

For an overview of a typical robot design read the story of how BoxBot was born.

Examples: The Emergence of Consciousness

The “Emergence of Consciousness” project is a collaboration between artist Anna Dumitriu, philosopher Blay Whitby and computational neuroscientist Luc Berthouze.

A project investigating the nature of consciousness through an epigenetic robotics persepctive (as part of the CCNR residency). The project is funded by Arts Council England.

BotBuilder.co.uk was commisioned to design and manufacture a large roving platform for the project.

Manufactured from "live edge" 3mm acrylic and driven by our 360 Degree Servos, the robot can freely move across surfaces at a decent speed.

Examples: Theremin Enclosure Design

Build Brighton were asked by Play group, local club promoters, to provide a 'sweeter' to persuade electronica djs [Evil Nine] to take part in an event they are promoting. The Theremin was presented to Evil Nine on 30th October 2009 at The Komedia.

Botbuilder.co.uk designed and manufactured the enclosure for the build Brighton Evil Nine Theremin project. Constructed out of 3mm "Live Edge" acrylic with laser etching effects.

Examples: SwarmBot

A robot created for the Brighton Robotics Group's SwarmBot project.

Brighton Robotics, in conjunction with BuildBrighton, were asked to put on an event in collaboration with Bristol Dorkbot for the dConstruct conference. The event was held on Wednesday 2nd September at The Skiff and consisted of an 'exhibition' of members projects plus the unveiling of a new group project that Brigton Robotics and BuildBrighton will have created together.

Botbuilder.co.uk was tasked with the design and manufacture of 20 of the little robots.

This bot evolved into the BoxBot product.

Examples: The Fortune Cats

As part of the White Night festival in Brighton (UK), 2 very large Fortune cats will be appearing in Jubilee Square on the evening of the 24th October 2009

Botbuilder.co.uk was commissioned to deign and create the mechanism for waving the 3ft long arms back and forth. In addition to this a 2.4Ghz radio control link and switch were designed to allow remote operation. For more information about this project see http://thefortunecats.com
